Where is Hotel The Champs?

Hotel The Champs is located in the village of Picard in the North-West of Dominica, about 1.5 miles / 2.5 km south of Portsmouth, the 2nd largest town of the island. Perched on a hill 200ft/70m high and just 8 min walk from Coconut Beach.
Set in the tranquility of the hillside of Picard, with a 270 degree panoramic view, Hotel The Champs gives a comfortable home-away-from-home feel, and will be your oasis for an enchanting Dominican stay.
Hotel The Champs is a 55 minute ride from the airport and also from the ferry. We offer airport and ferry pickup at a special guest rate. Please enquire before your arrival.
If you are taking a rental car, we strongly advice to have it delivered at Hotel The Champs and let us pick you up from the airport / ferry. Driving on the left on the narrow winding roads is pleasant adventure, best started from the hotel after a good night’s rest, not after an exhausting journey (and often in the dark).

How to get to Hotel The Champs?

Both airports of Dominica are at about 55 minutes by car and it is most likely that you will arrive at Douglas Charles (Melville Hall) Airport.
Another option is that you will arrive by ferry in the capital Roseau. That is about an hours’ drive by car.
If you wish, we will come and pick you up. We will then arrange someone with a sign with your name and the logo of The Champs .
If you take a rental car please ensure that you DRIVE on the LEFT!!

How to get to The Champs coming from Douglas-Charles (Melville Hall) Airport

When leaving the airport follow the road that goes straight on and then bends to the left making a turn around the airport runway.
Keep following the main road that winds through some villages.
After the village of Calibishie (around 15 minutes) you go up into the rainforest and after 10+ minutes you have to pay attention: you reach a junction. One road goes straight/left uphill. The other 90 degree right down to the flat. Take the road that goes with a 90 degree angle over the bridge. (So not straight/left uphill but down to the flat)
Then continue to follow the winding road until you are in Portsmouth and pass the big sports field on your right hand side.
There, 50 meters after the sports field, at the T-crossing you take a left.
You will cross a bridge and see a gasoline station on the left. After the gas station you will pass 2 side-streets on you left.
After those the main road turns sharply left and UP (do not go straight towards the small port).
Follow the road until you see several big white buildings on your right (this used to be Ross University).
Exactly opposite the main entrance of the university complex (entrance with security control booth) you turn left. Then, after 50 meters, turn left at an angle, taking the road which goes up the hill (this is a Y-junction with a restaurant-bar called Tulips on your right hand).
Follow this road 1/2 a mile uphill until you reach Hotel The Champs. (The first part of that last road is quite bad – sorry). There’s a big sign on the wall of the parking. See picture.

How to get to The Champs coming from Canefield Airport

Take the road going to the North (the sea on you left side) and follow the main road with all its turns and bends for some 45 to 50 minutes.
You’ll pass several villages and 1 time you cross a big bridge with separate lanes going over a fairly wide river. Passed that bridge you go left and continue to follow the main road.
Note: shortly after the bridge the main road turns to the right. Do not go straight into a village but follow the main road.
Attention: After the big bridge you will have 3 times a short deviation because you have to cross 3 Bailey bridges that were placed after tropical storm Erika in 2015.
At a certain moment the road becomes much wider with left and right lots of buildings. Now you are in Picard.
When you see a big 3-story beige-brown building on your left with a security booth in front, then you have reached (what used to be) Ross University.
Exactly opposite that main entrance with a security booth you turn right.

Getting to the Champs from Roseau Ferry Terminal

The first challenge: nowhere on the island are any signs for directions. 🙂 From the ferry terminal drive into the town and turn left into the road where many cars are trying to get out of the city; that’s Great George Street – Click on the map on the left for a bigger image -. If you choose the right road (or ask a local) then you will pass a bridge over the Roseau-river. At the end of the bridge turn left and follow the main road. You are now just an hour away from your destination. Follow from this point the details from coming from Canefield Airport which you will pass on your left side after about 10 minutes.
