Hotel The Champs opened its doors to the public in 2008, happily welcoming its first guest Ms. Gwen Whitford. While the proprietors were new to this kind of business, Gwen enjoyed her stay at the new hotel. Over the years she has become a family friend returning and staying over at the best rates and enjoying the company of both Lise and Hans, while noticing the growth of The Champs over the years.
After Hurricane Maria on September 19th 2017, Gwen too was worried about the state of The Champs and was hoping that it was not completely destroyed. In march of 2018, she was once again a guest of Hotel The Champs - a second home to her. By that time there was a hurricane resilient roof on the upper floor and the pool and all other amenities were up and running. She was amazed to see that things were on point at her favorite spot in the north.
The Champs provided her with the perfect view of Picard and Portsmouth to see the impact of hurricane maria on the northern section of the island. She took a walk up the hill behind the Hotel to check out the new look that the hurricane had given the area. She felt it was very different, but that the forage had grown back nicely. Upon her arrival back at the hotel, she met with Lise at the saltwater pool where they both did a few laps of swimming together. This was very rejuvenating as she was hot and sticky and very in need of this sort of relaxation. She listened to Lise's stories of Maria in a very relaxed mode.
After the swim, they changed for dinner and relaxed in the dinning area, watching the lights of sailboats in the distance. Gwen was finally served with a huge fish dinner of which she savored every bit. Over dinner, Hans updated her on the new TPO Layered roof of the champs and new upgrades to come after. By that time Gwen was very sleepy and needed to prepare for a flight out early the next day.
At 3:45 am on the next morning, the dedicated driver of The Champs, went knocking on the door of Gwen's room to take her to the airport. It was not easy for her to leave as she had once again enjoyed an excellent three day stay at the champs. She promised to be back soon and we know she will. What guests say about us on TripAdvisor:
